Today we are experiencing rapid change, and businesses and organizations must change to keep pace with these changes. Change is HARD and the cost can slow or even permanently cripple a once healthy business or organization. Think of your enterprise as if it was liquid. Liquid can change and does change depending on outside factors. Here you see an ice cube. The ice cube really does not care if it is liquid or solid. The interesting thing about an ice cube is that it has no morals or character yet it can take on several forms depending on the temperature.
Typically water becomes ice at 32 degrees farenheit or 0 degrees celcius. In addition to climate it takes time and intention to turn water into ice.
Many of the challanges today can be fixed simply by taking the time to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as they relate to present time.
Being effective is a matter of doing the right things; efficiency is the result of doing things right.
As we experience change and our culture changes, it becomes a high priority to ensure that you have adopted the best practices in order to give you an edge. When we take time to evaluate precisely where we are, what we are doing and how we plan to get to our destination, we gain a much greater chance of reaching that destination.
An early model of change developed by Kert Lewin described change as a three-stage process.The first stage he called "unfreezing". It involved overcoming inertia and dismantling the existing "mindset". Defense mechanisms have to be bypassed. In the second stage the change occurs. This is typically a period of confusion and transition. We are aware that old ways are being challenged but we do not have a clear picture to replace them with yet. The third and final stage he called "freezing" (often called "refreezing" by others). The new mindset is crystallizing and one's comfort level is returning to previous levels.
Change with defined ends is necessary because your competion is changing; you must change to keep time.
